This course provides building and fire officials with practical guidance on the process of code adoption in California. Participants will learn how state codes are developed, amended, and adopted at the local level, with a focus on both building and fire provisions. The session will cover the legal framework, procedural requirements, and best practices for navigating local adoption processes while aligning with state standards.

A key feature of the class is a hands-on exercise where participants will prepare and present a mock code adoption proposal to a governing board, simulating real-world challenges and feedback. This exercise is designed to build confidence and communication skills for officials tasked with explaining technical code provisions to policymakers and the public.

Representatives from the California Building Standards Commission will also be present to provide insight into the state’s role in code adoption and answer participant questions. By the end of the course, attendees will leave with practical tools, a better understanding of California’s code adoption process, and enhanced skills to effectively present and advocate for code changes in their jurisdictions.

Instructors: Robert Marshal, Senior Regulatory Engineer, UL Solutions, and Kevin Day.

Morning refreshments and lunch will be provided.
Advanced registration is required for this course; on-site registration will not be accepted.
